In an exclusive statement to the People magazine, she stated,
“It is with a heavy heart that I share the news, my mother, Rita Owens passed away today.”
She further added,
“Anyone that has ever met her knows what a bright light she was on this earth. She was gentle, but strong, sweet, but sassy, worldly but pragmatic, a woman of great faith and certainly the love of my life.”
Latifah also stated how her mother finds peace at last. As far as many of us know, she used to say how her mother stood by her side like a rock.
Ever since Rita was diagnosed with the condition, Latifah stayed and used to take care of her along with some relatives and a nurse.
But we all got to admit how strong her mother was. Despite all odds, she lived through the disease for such a long time.
In 2015, during an interview with the People magazine, Latifah divulged her mother has a defibrillator implanted in her heart just to avert any slight chance of a heart attack.
For over a decade, she was on a low fat and salt diet. The Girls Trip star even mentioned the level of respect she used to have for her mother grew exponentially by seeing her cope with the disease.
Our deepest sympathies to Queen and her family.
