With her sci-fi and Afrofuturist imagery and her protruding android alter ego, Cindi Mayweather, constantly on display, Monáe's life is as fresh and enterprising as it is alien. Monáe, 37, would rather see herself as a world builder than a pop star. The singer has been pushing and testing the boundaries of music, identity, and sexuality since her first day in the industry. The Many Moons singer has defied norms, penned her own rules, and in the process, has emerged as this fearless retro-futurist who's unafraid of breaking the archaic taboos. Monáe famously came out as pansexual in 2018 and announced her non-binary identity in 2022.   

The musician uses she/her or they/them pronouns but would love it if she could use "freeassmuthafucka," as her preferred pronoun. The Kansas-born's earliest relationship goes back to 2015; Janelle was perhaps still discovering and experimenting with her orientation before that. She was linked with British race car driver Lewis Hamilton, who is an ardent supporter of LGBTQ rights. The duo's secret romance came to light after they were allegedly rejected entry at a Paris Fashion Show in 2015. 

The Hidden Figures actress, however, keeps her relationship business out of the spotlight. Therefore, Janelle's dating history includes many unconfirmed romances. The Don't Judge Me singer was rumored to be dating actress Tessa Thompson in 2018. Thompson is known for her acclaimed performances in Mississippi Damned, For Colored Girls, and Dear White People. But most importantly, the actress has openly identified herself as bisexual.  

The rumors of Janelle and Tessa's romance hit the headlines in 2018 after Thompson starred in Monáe's Make Me Feel MV, and speculations churned out as fans witnessed the duo's palpable chemistry. Tessa's statement neither confirmed nor refuted the swirling rumor. "We love each other deeply. We're so close, we vibrate at the same frequency," Tessa said, adding, "if people want to speculate about what we are, that's okay,"  

Janella's unconfirmed romance with Thompson was soon followed by another speculated tryst with fellow musician Nate Wonder, with whom she has collaborated a number of times. The pair were even spotted getting cozy during a romantic getaway to Cabo in 2021. The musician pair never confirmed their romance. The singer-turned-actress was last linked with Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong'o.

Janelle explains how coming out and discovering her truth has made her more compassionate. "I try to challenge people to listen. Yeah, you may not necessarily understand. But listening is such a free thing we can do," the Yoga crooner said.

Monáe announced her non-binary identity during her appearance on Red Table Talk. "I just don't see myself as a woman, solely. I feel all of my energy. I feel like God is so much bigger than the he or the she," Janelle told hosts Jada Pinkett Smith, Willow Smith, and Adrienne Banfield-Norris. The multi-hyphenated musician recently gave fans a sneak peek of her new track, Float, which she announced on her 35th birthday in December. "Best way to describe how I’m feeling on this birthday. It's float season for me baby," the singer tweeted as she teased the theme of her new song.
