American women's hockey team has ended 20 years of Olympic misery against Canada and won gold in ice hockey Thursday afternoon, 22nd February.
Team America was looking to end the 20-year-long domination by the Canadians in the Winter Olympic final and they started the match with a lead through former Boston Pride's Hilary Knight before the end of the first half.
Haley Irwin and Marie-Philip Poulin's goals in the second half appeared sufficient for the Canadians to seal another Olympic gold; fifth consecutive times until Monique Lamoureux scored the equalizer for the USA in the third period.
The match went to the extra period but could get no result, and the match went to the shootout. Monique Lamoureux netted the third goal for the United States in the shootout bringing America the Olympic gold with the final scoreline 3-2 after the shootout.
