A Japanese physician and researcher who is also Nobel Prize-winning stem cell researcher. He developed a method for generating stem cells from existing cells of the body. He is son to Shozaburo who was owner of a small factory related to sawing machines. He graduated from Tennji High School and obtained M.D. at Kobe University. In 1993 he completed his PhD at Osaka City University Graduate School. He started his career working at the Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco. Currently he is working as the director of Center for iPS Cell Research. He is also as professor at the Institute for Frontier Medical Sciences.
