In the month of April 2017, ESPN decided to layoff off 100 employees. And former Sports Illustrated reporter Jeff Pearlman said why the network hadn't cut some of the most reputable names like Stephen A. Smith.
Perlman wrote on Twitter with an essay ' Smith and his multimillion-dollar salary were safe because he's really good at Yelling'.

“I’m going to ask Mr. Jeff Pearlman, and all the Jeff Pearlmans of the world, a simple question: Why are you focusing on me? There are people in our business who actually get paid more, who do less and produce less. Why are you not talking about them?”

He started as a radio host on WEPN New York on April 11, 2005. After that, he joined ESPN in August 2005 and is currently an analyst and talks show host.
In 2011 he was also regarded as a columnist for ESPN.com. He is very successful in his career but is also popular for his controversial remarks during the show.
In July 2014, Stephen gave controversial remarks on the ESPN2 show that women express domestic violence. His remarks were disliked by many of the viewers.

Later ESPN released a statement and said, "we will talk to Smith about his comment and he apologized once again through social media'.
