A Russian pilot, Major Roman Filipov, 33, killed himself by detonating a grenade to avoid being abducted by the Al-Quaeda-linked rebellions jihadists Al Nusra Front on Saturday, 3rd Feb. in Idlib, Syria.

Video captured by the rebels shows Major Roman Filipov shouting ‘This is for our guys!’ just moments before detonating the grenade.

Russian Defense Ministry released a statement saying Filipov fought ‘the rebels until the last minute’ and ‘detonated grenade when they approached.’

The Ministry added that Maj. Filipov was ejected from his Sukhoi 25SM jet after it was hit with a missile from a portable-surface-to-air launcher in Idlib, Syria.

The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said:

The pilot died heroically The pilot's family and friends have our condolences, and we are proud of our heroes.

As per Times of Israel, head of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdel Rahman said:

The pilot was killed as he fought Islamist rebels who had shot down his plane and were taking him captive. There have been dozens of Russian air strikes in the area over the past 24 hours. This plane was also carrying out raids there.

Maj. Filipov is survived by a wife and a four-year-old daughter. He has been honored with a prestigious Kremlin's the Hero of Russia medal, posthumously.

Russia has been supporting the Syrian government in Idlib where the Syrian soldiers have been fighting against the Al-Nusra Front. And after Major Filipov's death on Saturday, Russia has intensified their raid on the rebel-held towns and cities in the province.
