After claiming political asylum Homiyu initiated his career as a long distance runner for Germany and came fifth in the 1500m at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics.

He achieved indoor title for the first time in the year 2012 and claimed his first outdoor title the following year.

Winning the German indoor title in the 1500m, he gained the third position at the 2012 German Athletics Championships. Gradually, he improved his personal best in the 1500m in 3:34.76 minutes.

The year 2013 was the lucky one for the star as a runner as he gained German citizenship that June. He succeeded as the runner-up in the 1500m at the German indoors gaining the 10,000m national title.

His progress raised a lot of questions in the German society being a foreign-born runner quickly acquiring German citizenship and also selecting in the national team.

Carsten Schlangen, however, said that the scenario could improve and encourage German runners rather limiting their international experience.

He has an estimated net worth of about 0.3 million dollars as of 2017.
