Yellowstone Super-volcano Close To Eruption? Scientists Show Chances Of Eruption After Over 200 Earthquakes Within Weeks

Researchers have said Yellowstone supervolcano eruption has been sparked after a swarm of earthquakes hit the Yellowstone National Park in last few days. The national geological survey has shown around 10 quakes has hit in a single day alone. If the volcano erupted again, a choking veil of magma and gases would spew from its chasm, covering the landscape in molten ash. The USGS has predicted as much as 90,000 people could be killed in the initial explosion.

Scientists Predict Yellowstone Super-Volcano Close To Erupt After More Than 200 Earthquakes Hit The Volcano In Last 10 Days

  • After over hundreds of earthquakes hit northwest America, scientists predicted Yellowstone Super-Volcano might erupt soon.
  • As of 18 February 2018, scientists said they detected more than 200 earthquakes in less than last two weeks.
  • Still, the experts say the magma activity is 'relatively weak,' and alert level remains normal.

According to the experts, the latest swarm of earthquakes began on 8th of February around eight miles northeast of West Yellowstone, Montana, and the activities of the volcano have increased dramatically in the days since.

However, the scientists have said there is no reason to worry. Since the earthquakes are likely to affect the volcanos beneath the surface, the magma activity is 'relatively weak,' and the alert level at the supervolcano remains constant.

Experts have mentioned that the volcano erupts roughly once in a million years and some geological surveys have claimed it is already showing signs it could be ready to erupt once again.

The United States Geological Survey said,

The present swarm started on February 8, with a few events occurring per day

It continued,

On February 15, seismicity rates and magnitudes increased markedly. As of the night of February 18, the largest earthquake in the swarm is M2.9, and none of the events have been felt. All are occurring about 8 km (5 mi) beneath the surface.

If the volcano erupted again, a choking veil of magma and gases would spew from its chasm, covering the landscape in molten ash. The USGS has predicted as much as 90,000 people could be killed in the initial explosion.
