A South Sudanese British model and designer, Alek Wek is a daughter of Alek Wek Akuol, a housewife, and Athian (1933–1985), an education official. Wek has worked for many fashion houses including Chanel, Moschino, Fendi, Dries Van Noten, Ralph Lauren, Karl Lagerfeld and Marc Jacobs. Moreover, Wek also designs handbags called "Wek 1933". In 2011, she appeared as a guest judge in the sixteenth cycle of 'America's Next Top Model'.
Alek Wek has been in a relationship with Riccardo Sala, an Italian real estate developer, since 2003. She is a missionary for World Vision, an organization which combats AIDS. Alek is an ambassador for Doctors Without Borders in Sudan and devotes her time to UNICEF. She is popularly known as the first African model to appear on the cover of 'Elle' in 1997.
