Dan Ivan Hicks, better known as Dan Hicks, is an American singer and song writer. He is also an excellent guitarist who has an idiosyncratic style with the combined elements of cowboy folks, jazz, country, swing, bluegrass, pop and gypsy music. Some of his popular songs include “I Scare Myself” and “Canned Music.”
Early Life
Born on 9th December 1942, Dan Hicks is one only son of Ivan L. Hacks and Evelyn Kehl. His father was a military man so they traveled frequently and finally settled down in California.
Later, he moved to the north of San Francisco in Santa Rosa and did higher education. He was a drummer in grade school and was one of the members of school marching band. At the age of 14, he performed with area dance bands and had a rotating spot on Times Out for Teens, a local radio program.
He completed a degree in broadcasting from San Francisco State College in 1965. During his undergraduate, his interest shifted to guitar and started performing at a local coffeehouse.
Career
After performing on the small stage, Dan decided to do something great and formed Dan Hanks and His Hot Licks band in 1967. The band lasted until 1971 and broke up due to certain reason. They have also published the album, Original Recordings, which was produced by Bob Johnston.
He reunited the band with some of the co-member Page and Leopard along with vocalists Naomi Ruth Eisenberg and Maryann Price, and guitarist John Girton. Altogether, they have recorded three albums.
Apart from a singing career, he was cast in some of the documentary movies including Revolution in 1968 and Rockin at the Red Dog in 1996. He also appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, an American bi-weekly magazine.
The band's last album Live at Davies released in 2013.
Personal Life
Dan was married to Clare Wasserman in the year 1997. He and his wife are blessed with one child.
In 2014, he was diagnosed with throat and liver cancer. On 6th February 2016, he died because of cancer at his home in Mill Valley, California.
In the respect of Dan, Surfdog Recording released Greatest Licks I Feel Like Singin’, a complicated album paying tribute and celebrating Dan’s life and legacy.
