Early Life and Education
Denzel Washington was born on Denzel Hayes Washington on December 28, 1954. He is the son of Pentecostal minister Denzel Hayes Washington and a beautician Lennis. He grew up with his two siblings. His parents got divorced at the age of fourteen, and his mother raised him and his siblings.
Washington attended Oakland Military Academy after completing elementary school at Pennington-Grimes Elementary School. He did his graduation in Journalism from Fordham University in San Francisco. He then enrolled at the American Conservatory Theater to pursue his acting career.
Career
Washington made his film debut in 1981 in a comedy entitled A Carbon Copy after appearing in some TV commercials and programs. He appeared as a lead role in the hit TV drama St. Elsewhere in 1982. He was nominated for an Oscar for his role as real-life martyr Steve Biko in Cry Freedom (1987). Later he received an Oscar for best supporting actor in the film Glory (1989).
In 1990 Denzel worked with Spike Lee in the films such as Mo’ Better Blues and Malcolm X. His performance in the 1990s got him three Golden Globe Awards for best actor in the films like The Pelican Brief, Philadelphia, Crimson Tide, Courage Under Fire and The Hurricane.
Likewise, Denzel has received several awards for his outstanding performance in the films he starred in. For his movie Flight, he was nominated for An Academy Award for best actor in 2012.
As a director, his directorial venture includes movies like Antwone Fisher (2002), The Great Debaters (2007). In his movie Fences, he directed and starred alongside Viola Davis, in 2016.

Denzel is married to his long-time girlfriend Pauletta Pearson who is also an actress. They met on the set of his first screen work, the television movie, Wilma. The couple is blessed with four children namely John David, Katia, Malcolm, and Olivia. His oldest son is a football player and plays for Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. It’s a big deal to last the relationship for longer than a year in today’s generation, but the duo has well maintained their relationship for 34 long years and renewed their wedding vows in South Africa in 1995, which was officiated by Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
