Ellen Leslye Cleghorne was born on November 29, 1965, in Brooklyn, New York, USA, to parents Evelyn and Sydney. She was raised in the Red Hook Projects and has a brother named Jonathan Cleghorne.

Likewise, she completed her education at Brooklyn Technical High School and Hunter College. She participated in the 1989 Johnnie Walker Comedy Search, where she collaborated on a video directed by Neal Marshad, a producer for Saturday Night Live’s short films, after starting her comedy journey in New York City’s comedy clubs.

In 1991, she made appearances on Def Comedy Jam and secured minor roles in the second season of In Living Color, leading to her discovery by the producers of Saturday Night Live.

The First Black Woman to Last More Than One Season on SNL

Cleghorne joined Saturday Night Live in 1991 and remained on the show for four seasons until 1995. Throughout her tenure, she showcased her talent by impersonating notable figures including Alfre Woodard, Dr. Dre, Anita Baker, and many others.

Additionally, she created two recurring characters, Zoraida, an NBC page, and Queen Shenequa, a frequent presence in the recurring Weekend Update sketch.

Cleghorne appeared on SNL from 1991 to 1995 for four seasons.

Cleghorne's impactful presence on the show made her the third black woman to be credited on Saturday Night Live, following Yvonne Hudson and Danitra Vance, and the first woman of color to serve as a full-fledged cast member for more than one season.

Her notable contributions led to her inclusion in the 40th-anniversary special on February 15, 2015, and she was later recognized as the 69th greatest Saturday Night Live cast member by Rolling Stone magazine.
