Gamilah was the daughter of Malcolm X and Betty Shabazz, who were both influential civil rights activists and American Muslims. Malcolm X left the Nation of Islam in 1964 and joined the civil rights movement and Sunni Islam. He was murdered by members of the Nation of Islam in New York City on February 21, 1965, while speaking to a crowd.

Betty married Malcolm X in 1958 and converted her religion to Islam. She saw her husband’s assassination and raised six daughters as a single mother. She obtained a Ph.D. in education administration from the University of Massachusetts in 1975 and became a professor and director of communications and public relations at Medgar Evers College in Brooklyn. She passed away from severe burns caused by a fire that her grandson set in her apartment in 1997.

The Tragic Death of Gamilah's Parents

Both of her parents were well-known civil rights activists in the United States, but Gamilah Lumumba Shabazz lost them in tragic ways. On February 21, 1965, at the Audubon Ballroom in Manhattan, members of the Nation of Islam killed her father, Malcolm X, by shooting him in the chest 21 times as he was speaking to a crowd.

Her mother, Betty Shabazz, succumbed to severe burns on June 23, 1997, after her grandson, Malcolm Shabazz, set fire to her apartment.
