Greer Garson, born Eileen Evelyn Greer Garson on September 29, 1904, in London, was a celebrated British-American film and theatre actress and singer. While her upbringing was Irish, having been born in London set the pace for her career.
Educated at King's College London and the University of Grenoble, Garson turned from teaching to acting. Discovered by Louis B. Mayer, she made her debut in Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1939) for which she received an Oscar nomination.
Garson was the star of some of the most iconic films, including Pride and Prejudice, Blossoms in the Dust, and Mrs. Miniver for which she won an Oscar. She received seven nominations from the Academy—when she was a top box office draw.
