James Beard was a chef, television personality and food writer who many consider to be the "father of American-style gourmet cooking." His mother Elizabeth operated the Gladstone Hotel, and his father John Beard worked at the city's customs house. He compiled his catering recipes into a cookbook titled Hors D'Oeuvre and Canapés (1940), and by 1946 he became the host of television’s first ever cooking show in 1955. He established The James Beard Cooking School. The James Beard Foundation was established in Beard's honor to provide scholarships to aspiring food professionals and champion the American culinary tradition which Beard helped create.
James Beard was homosexual. He was kicked out of Reed College in 1922 for being gay. In his memoir, he stated, "By the time I was seven, I knew that I was gay, and until I was about forty-five, I had a really violent temper."He never achieved satisfaction from his awkward homosexual orientation, so food was Beard's consolation. He was, by all accounts, an imposing father figure with an insatiable hunger for food; famous for his big temper and even bigger heart; and constantly on a mission to get as much pleasure out of life as possible while inspiring people to cook great.
