Joshua Kushner was born on 12 June 1985 in Livingston, New Jersey, to a rich Jewish family. He is the youngest son of Charles Kushner, one of the most powerful real estate developers, and Seryl Stadtmauer. Josh spent his childhood in an Orthodox Jewish environment, where he attended Jewish schools and yeshiva. Josh and his other brothers, including brother Jared Kushner, were raised in a rich residential area near New York City.

Joshua pursued post-secondary school studies at Harvard University, where he earned his degree in government and political science in 2008. He then earned an MBA from Harvard Business School in 2011, balancing entrepreneurship and schoolwork in the interim.
