Madjid Bougherra is an Algerian professional football player who is currently serving as the coach of his country's local national team, Algeria A' national team. As a player, he played for several clubs such as Gueugnon, Sheffield Wednesday, Charlton Athletic, Rangers, etc. On the national level, he played as a central defender from 2004 to 2015 wearing jersey number 24.

Madjid Bougherra's Career as a Football Player And Manager

Madjid Bougherrra had an impressive football career, having played for several prestigious clubs. The 40-year-old began his youth career at AS Quetignry and later at AS Longvi. He started his senior professional career playing for Gueugnon in July 2002.

After playing for three and a half years for the Ligue 2 club, the 6ft 3in tall man joined the English Championship side, Crewe Alexandra, on loan in January 2006.

Upon the end of the loan, he joined Sheffield Wednesday and played there for half a season. In the January transfer window of 2007, he joined Charlton Athletic for a signing fee of £2.5 million

After a successful spell at Athletic, Bougherra joined Scottish Premier League club Rangers for £2.5 million and signed a four-year contract in July 2008. He played with Glen Kamara in the Rangers. He spent three seasons with the Glasgow club, playing the coveted UEFA Champions League along with winning three league titles, one cup, and one League cup trophy.

In August 2011, Madjid joined the Qatari club Lekhwiya for £1.7 million and stayed till May 2014. In September 2016, he joined the Greek club Aris; however, having not played a single game for the team, he announced his retirement as a player from football in December 2016.

Speaking about his international career, he possesses impressive stats. He has 70 caps for his national side, scoring four times in 11 years. The versatile athlete was also his country's captain in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Manager

Madjid Bougherra started his coaching career by joining as a technical coach of Georges Leekens at the national team of Algeria. He became head manager of Qatari club Al-Duhai SC's reserve team Under 23 team in 2017.  

In June 2019, he became the manager of UAE Pro-League club Fujairah FC and, less than seven months later left the club as a result of taking the club into the relegation zone.

In June 2020, the Algerian Football Federation appointed Madijid as the head coach of the Algeria A' national team. Under his managership, he led his side, Algeria A' national football team, to their first-ever FIFA Arab Cup trophy.   

Faced Racism As a Player 

In spite of achieving so much in his fourteen years of career as a player, Madjid Bougherra's career was not always memorable. During his time at his birthland club Gueugnon he went through various prejudice because of his religious background.  

His then-coach, Victor Zvunka, at Guengnon, once told him not to fast during Ramadan. Recalling the moment, Madjid said,

"He lacked respect for my religion, even though the Muslims at the club were the best players."

On one occasion, he and his Muslim teammates turned up for training wearing their robes, which his manager forbade them to wear in that manner again. 

For all he underwent despite being in his homeland, the football manager said in an interview France is a difficult place to live for people like him and insisted that Scotland is a much better place to live in comparison.
