She was a daughter of Malcolm MacLeod (1866-1954), a crofter, fisherman and Compulsory Officer (truancy officer) and Mary MacLeod (née Smith) (1867-1963). MacLeod lived with her older sister named Christina Matheson on Long Island and worked as a domestic servant for four years in 1930 U.S. Census listing her occupation as a maid or domestic.
