Owen Cooper was born on 5th December 2009 in Warrington, Cheshire, England, to a working-class family. His mom is a carer, and his dad works in IT. Owen has two older brothers who are not actors. Owen was originally interested in football and represented the Warrington Rylands U15s. Impressed by Tom Holland's performance in The Impossible, he began weekly acting classes at Manchester's The Drama Mob, a drama school founded by Coronation Street actor Tina O'Brien. His parents were pleased that he was interested in acting but not forced into it, as he initially considered it a hobby first.
Personal Life and Interests
Besides acting, PlayStation playtime is a favorite of Owen, as well as being a big fan of the Liverpool Football Club. Down-to-earth and humble, despite the rapid rise to stardom, he is. In his teenage years, in public, Owen has not spoken of romantic relationships. Owen enjoys making room in his up-and-coming career for ordinary teen life, made possible through his friends and family.
Breakout Role in Adolescence
His first professional acting role was Jamie Miller in the 2025 Netflix psychological crime drama miniseries Adolescence. He was scouted after over 500 auditions when the production was seeking a Northern English actor and screened tapes from his drama school. The series, filmed between July and October 2024, had a unique style with very long single-take scenes that pushed the cast to the limit.

Cooper's portrayal of a 13-year-old suspected killer of a schoolfriend attracted widespread critical acclaim. Evening Standard referred to his acting as one of the greatest child actor debuts. The performance also brought with it essential debates surrounding youth, masculinity, and social media.
Awards and Recognition
For Adolescence, Owen Cooper won the Gotham TV Award for Outstanding Supporting Performance in a Limited Series. Most notably, at the age of 15, he became the youngest-ever Primetime Emmy nominee as an Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, a historic milestone for young thespians.

Future Projects
Following Adolescence, Owen is also set to play teenage Heathcliff in Emerald Fennell's 2026 movie take on Wuthering Heights. He will also be starring as Callum in the new BBC Three show Film Club.

In 2025, he also appeared in the music video for Sam Fender's song "Little Bit Closer." His performances in Adolescence led to more roles, including a recommendation by actor Stephen Graham to his agent for the Wuthering Heights role.
