An American musician, music producer, businessman, record executive and disc-jockey who played very crucial in the establishment of rock and roll during the 1950s. He was the youngest among eight children. Since his family background was not strong when he was young he used to work on a farm, in a grocery store, and in a funeral parlor. In 1939 he moved through Memphis with his family . At the same time he went at Beale Street where he fell in love with city's music scene and was fascinated in musical career. he attended former Coffee High School which is located in Florence. He started his career as DJ and radio engineer for Muscle Shoals radio station WLAY. He was also founder of Sun Records and Sun Studio in Memphis. He is the one who discovered the popular artists like Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash and Elvis Presley. He was also first non-musician to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2003 he died due to respiratory disease at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis.

Early Life and Education of Sam Philips 

Sam Philips was born as Samuel Cornelius Phillip on January 5, 1923, in 
Florence, Alabama, United States. He was the youngest of his eight siblings who belongs to the white ethnicity and holds American nationality.

He was raised in a poor family where his parents do farming for a living. He also used to pick cotton in the fields along with his parents. The experience of hearing workers singing in the fields left a big impression on the young Sam.

He attended the former Coffee High School in Florence where he used to perform on school band. However, due to the sudden death of his dad, he has to left the school and started working at the grocery store and funeral parlor.

Sam Philips' Career

Sam started his musical career in the 1940s, he worked a DJ and radio engineer. Later in 1945, he served in WREC as an announcer and sound engineer for four years.

Memphis Recording Service and Sun Record

On January 3, 1950, Philips opened his own recording studio at 706 Union Avenue in Memphis, Tennessee. It served the weddings and funerals program as well as let amateurs to perform.

In 1952, he launched the Phillips's own label studio at Memphis Recording Service. He combined different styles of music and provide an interesting fusion to audiences. 

In the journey of 16 years, Sun Records produced more Rock and Roll records than any other record label of its time, producing 226 singles.

WHER

Along with Memphis recording service and Sun Recording studio, in 1955, he launched the radio station WHER, the "All-Girl Radio". It was the first radio station in the US, as almost every position at the station was held by a woman.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

Sam Philips was a part of the first group inducted into the  Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and his contribution to the genre was still the topic of gossip. He was the first non-performer inducted.

He was the first non-performer inducted. He was awarded the Grammy Trustees Award for lifetime achievement in 1991.

Sam Philips' Personal Life

Sam took his final breath on July 30, 2003, at St. Francis Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee. He lost his life due to respiratory failure.

Sam was married to Rebecca Irene Burns in 1942 but after 18 years of marriage, the duo ended their relationship into divorce. The duo shared the two sons; Knox and Jerry, two granddaughters, and a great-grandson.

Today his wife ex-wife also no more as she died at the age of 77  in 2012. Sam's studio was now handled by his children same as his father.
