A generational icon, a global popstar, and a verified legend in the Latin music, Shakira is so much more than her title as a singer. The Colombian songstress's glorious career spans over three decades, during which Shakira created and augmented a unique mix of Latin pop music and her distinctive dancing style.  

Shakira's host of accolades, which also stand as a testament to her achievements, includes three Grammys, twelve Latin Grammys, and seven Billboard Music Awards. The Hips Don't Lie crooner is coping with the truth that she is no longer in her prime, and not just career-wise. Shakira is embroiled in a nasty tax evasion accusation and is set to face a trial in Spain. If found guilty, the singer is looking up to a prison time of eight years and a €23.8m fine. Shakira's relationship with Pique has also hit the end road after twelve long years. The pair started dating ahead of the 2010 World Cup.    

Skimming through the pair's old mushy interviews, Gerard first fell head over heels for the Columbian beauty. "It all started when we were in South Africa and I wrote to her," the Spanish footballer said, recalling a stupid question he asked the singer to get it started. By May 2011, the pair were already in an official relationship. "I present my sun to you," the Waka Waka singer wrote while confirming her romance with the footballer.  

The pair have since created a family and a little world of their own, not that it matters but out of wedlock though. Shakira gave birth to the couple's first kid,  Milan Piqué Mebarak, on January 22, 2013. The twosome welcomed their second, Sasha, on January 29, 2015. Shakira and Pique may have had their ups and downs in private, but in the public eye, the pair have always exhibited an enviable relationship.  

Fans have often probed into the couple's reluctance to marry, often throwing it on Gerard. But the Grammy-winning crooner candidly discussed the topic in the past. Shakira seemingly believes marriage to be an unnecessary step in a relationship. "We already have what's essential, you know? We have a union, a love for each other, and a baby," the singer said, adding, "a marriage is not going to change them."    

The singer-footballer duo had a steamy and happening relationship up until last year, with the duo often jetting off on holidays with their kids and Shakira sharing intimate details about their enduring romance. I don't want him to see me as his wife. I'd rather him see me as his girlfriend and lover. It's like a little forbidden fruit," the Grammy winner had said. The pair's shocking split rumors emerged earlier this year and was confirmed in June.

In an exclusive interview with Elle, the Latin pop star opened up about what she calls the "darkest hour of her life." Shakira says going through a breakup is hard, and to go through it as a public figure has made it harder for her. "I’ve remained quiet and just tried to process it all," the singer begins, adding, "because I'm in the public eye and because our separation is not like a regular separation.  

The She-Wolf hitmaker reveals she has paparazzi camping outside her house very often. After a brief swirling rumor, Shakira and Pique confirmed their split with a joint statement in June. "We regret to confirm that we are separating," the statement read. The duo further explained, "For the well-being of our children, who are our highest priority, we ask that you respect our privacy. Thank you for your understanding."

The mother of two explains how the whole situation has been incredibly difficult for their kids. "It's really upsetting for two kids who are trying to process their parents’ separation. This is probably the darkest hour of my life," says the singer. And while the Columbian battles life's different unprecedented situations, her breakup, the forthcoming trial, and her father being hospitalized, Pique has already moved on with a young model named Clara Chia, 23.

 Pique is a Barcelona-born footballer, who currently plays as a center-back for La Liga club Barcelona. Pique started his early career in FC Barcelona's youth teams as a defensive midfielder. He made his debut for Manchester United in 2004. He remained with the club till 2008 before making his way back to Barcelona.   

Considered one of the best defenders of his generation, Gerard has since cemented a notable profile playing for Barcelona, UEFA Euro 2012, and representing Spain 102 times. Pique retired from international football in 2018 and is now an integral member of the Barcelona team.  

Though the world knows him as the esteemed footballer and the father of Shakira's two kids, no longer a good boyfriend though, Gerard's profile as a savvy businessman remains a subdued aspect of the footballer. He is the founder of Kosmos Holding, a sports and media investment group he started with Hiroshi Mikitani, Edmund Chu, Nullah Sarker, and Mike Evans.
