The first meeting took place when Taylor played a show with the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall, where Smedvig worked. The two started their friendship after talking with one another. The bonding was so strong that it turned into a relationship with both started to develop feelings.

The couple started dating two years later when Taylor became estranged from his second wife, Kathryn Walker. Although there was no announcement of their getting married, they surprised everyone when the lovebirds walked down the aisle in 2001 at the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Boston.

Despite going through two divorces, Taylor has found true love with Smedvig and they have built a solid and lasting relationship.
