Michel and Steve crossed each other's path in a Jazz festival through a mutual friend, in Bayou, St. John back in 2004. They were both involved with other people romantically but couldn't resist each other, as they were so full of life at the time. They remained friends for a long time and then eventually decided to take their relationship up a notch.

They dated for roughly around 4 years and then finally got married on May 16, 2008. After around three years when the duo was trying to conceive their first child, Steve was diagnosed with ALS, which changed the dynamics of everything in the life of the couple. The year 2011 was heartbreaking as well as an adventurous year for the couple, with the diagnosis of the disease as well as the birth of their first son, Rivers.

She alongside her husband also runs a charity to help the patients of ALS, named Team Gleason. The Gleason couple became a beacon of hope for patients to demonstrate that they can not only live but thrive after the diagnosis. They have come in front of the cameras as well as news to benefit their cause.

The struggle of Steve and Michel was also depicted in a documentary named 'Gleason' released in 2016. After being diagnosed with ALS, former professional football player Steve Gleason began to make a video diary for his unborn son, as he, his wife, and their friends and family work to raise money for ALS patients as his disease worsened.

Michel Varisco Gleason: Finding Solace in Art?

Yes, it's true! Her stress and pain have found its output through art. Her upcoming exhibit in Warren, Pennsylvania, is expected to be a place where her internal identity can emerge. She referred to her drawings  as 'emotional doodles.' They were safe, imaginary mazes where her thoughts could wander around, get lost and find solitude.

She also said that the drawings provided her some much-needed relief. Michel whenever stressed, heartbroken or anxious would draw these patterns, which first started as loopy shapes and tiny little figures. They in course of time became personal hieroglyphics, a language she could express herself through while words failed her.

As a matter of fact, the colored pencil lines waltzing through the paper seemed like a clear sign of all the ongoing challenges of her life, raising a small boy while helping care for a severely disabled husband. The responsibility of raising a girl also currently resides on her soldiers. She is often seen posting about her adorable children on Instagram.

The sizes of the shapes and the intensity of the colors, were all under controlled. Varisco said she is very proud of her drawings and having them blown up into large-scale prints has highly boosted her confidence. Since she began offering prints for sale in 2016 and has sold more than 50 of them.

Nelson, a board member of the Crary Art Gallery, got emotional upon watching the movie "Gleason," and invited her to show a selection of her works. She was thrilled but sure a little apprehensive as she has no formal art background and was starting her art career in her early 40s.

Michel shies away from being called an artist but has accepted the fact that she loves creating art. Her art is really complicated. Some strokes seemed to express stress, some confusion, and some of the symbols seemed to be inspired by medical tools.
