The couple was last seen together in September 2016 when they attended the LGBT Center 47th Anniversary Gala Vanguard Awards in West Hollywood, Los Angeles.

The couple's relationship turned cold since mid-2016, which was speculated after the 47-year-old actress appeared single in the Emmys 2016, which apparently was their marriage anniversary.  When People asked her why her husband was missing from the award function, she answered,

We just had our anniversary on the day of the Emmys which was hilarious. He's come every year, he’s been so supportive and this year he was playing in a tennis tournament and I wasn’t nominated as an individual so I said, ‘What do you want to do on our anniversary?’ I mean it’s such an honor to be nominated and to go, but it’s tough to be a purse holder.

In December 2017, the couple was reported to be trying to 'keep it together for their sons,' however, their relationship was 'holding on by a thread.'

Bowen and Phillips married on September 9, 2004, and they have three children together in their 13-year-long relationship. They welcomed their first child, Oliver Phillips on April 10, 2007, and twin sons, John and Gustav Phillips on May 8, 2009. Bowen was pregnant with twin sons while filming the first season of Modern Family.
