Fake Heiress Anna Delvey to be Released From ICE Custody

Anna Delvey (Sorkins) has been granted bail, but must find a place to stay: Complete story here!

Popularly known for inspiring the Netflix drama series Inventing Anna, Anna Sorokin, better known as Anna Delvey, is to be released from an ICE detention center- the only condition being Anna finds a place to stay. On Wednesday, U.S immigration judge Charles Conroy granted Anna a $10,000 bond. Delvey, 31, a Russian-born girl, posed as a German heiress and conned many from 2013 to 2017.

The fake heiress was convicted of grand larceny in New York and was sentenced to four to twelve years in prison in May 2019. Prior to the conviction, Anna had rejected a plea deal of three to nine years in prison in 2018. Released early on good behavior last year, ICE agents arrested Delvey again after six weeks. The Russian-born is obliged to provide a residential address, where she will be kept under house arrest until her deportation.

Netflix's Inventing Anna, where Julia Garner plays the fake German heiress, endowed Delvey with wide popularity and celebrity status on social media, but Delvey's release from the detention center also requires her to steer clear of social media. Anna boasts over 1 million followers on Instagram.

Delvey's lawyer Duncan Levin expressed gratification with the ruling in a statement. "We are extremely gratified by the court's decision today to release Anna Sorokin. The judge rightfully recognized that Anna is not a danger to the community," Duncan said, adding, "while there are still a few hurdles to jump through on her release conditions, Anna is thrilled to be getting out so she can focus on appealing her wrongful conviction."

Anna came to New York City in 2013. The con woman had previously lived in London and Paris. While in NYC, Delvey interned for the French magazine Purple. Parading as a wealthy German heiress, Anna infiltrated the most affluent socialites' circle and, in the process, scammed several people, hotels, and banks. At the peak of her swindling business, Anna even created the Anna Delvey Foundation- to lure other socialites and donors.

Anna's real identity started unveiling in 2017 when she was evicted from multiple hotels after bouncing from one to another. In October of the year, the con woman was in a sting operation. Delvey's prosecution revealed that she had stolen around $275,000. Anna was found guilty of eight charges in April 2019, including attempted grand larceny in the first degree, grand larceny in the third degree, and theft of service.

Delvey was sentenced to four to 12 years and was ordered a restitution payment of about $199,000 and a fine of $24,000. Born to a middle-class family in Russia, Anna's family has reportedly disowned her since her conviction. "I do not have any influence on her life and what she does. It is down to her what she has done," Anna's father, Vadim, a truck driver, said in his statement.
