Kate Winslet Recalls Being Fat Shamed in Infamous Titanic Debate
Kate Winslet calls out tabloids for fat-shaming her early in her career: The actress reflects on the infamous Titanic debate!
Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet recently appeared on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast ahead of Titanic's 25th anniversary and amid Avatar: The Way of Water's release. The actress addressed the infamous Titanic debate that has been going on for decades. Recalling the scene where her character, Rose DeWitt Bukater, survives floating on a door while Leonardo DiCaprio's character, Jack Dawson, sinks to his death, Winslet says she faced mean response from both viewers and tabloids about the sad ending.
While everyone recovered from the heartbreaking plot, the persistent question that remained was how Rose and Jack couldn't fit on the door. "Apparently, I was too fat," Winslet says as she recounts the mean comments hurled at her aftermath of the blockbuster. The 47-year-old actress adds, "they were so mean. I wasn't even fucking fat. If I could turn back the clock, I would have used my voice in a completely different way."
Winslet has been open about being fat-shamed throughout her life. The Heavenly Creatures star once revealed the hurtful comments about her body started when she was growing up. "I was even told that I might be lucky in my acting if I was happy to settle for the fat-girl parts," Winslet shared. She parallels the tabloids' treatment of her to bullying and shares how she would've responded if she could go back in time.
Starring Kate, Zoe Saldana, and Sam Worthington, 'Avatar: The Way of Water' hit the screen on 16 December!
"I would have said to journalists; I would have responded, I would have said, 'Don't you dare treat me like this. I'm a young woman, and my body is changing," Kate tells host Josh, adding, "I'm deeply insecure, I'm terrified, don't make this any harder than it already is. That's bullying, you know, and actually borderline abusive." Winslet had a few notable credits, including her debut, Heavenly Creatures, Hamlet, and Jude, before rising to global stardom with James Cameron-directed Titanic in 1997.
Starring DiCaprio, Winslet, Billy Zane, Frances Fisher, and Gloria Stuart, Titanic hit the big screen on December 19, 1997, and became one of the highest-grossing movies of all time, with a box office collection of over $2.billion. It won 11 Oscars out of the 14 nominated. Addressing the decade-old question if Jack could have squeezed in with Rose and survived the sinking, Winslet says, "Once and for all, he could have fit on that door, but it would not have stayed afloat and that it was not a sustainable idea."
