Katie Couric is speaking out about her breast cancer diagnosis, which she received after having a mammogram this summer.

As per Yahoo, Katie Couric has been diagnosed with breast cancer. She is a journalist, presenter, producer, and author from the United States.

In an essay published Wednesday, the 65-year-old journalist revealed that she received the diagnosis on June 21, 2022, which also happened to be her eighth wedding anniversary with John Molner.

"I began to feel ill, and the room began to spin," Couric said of the moment her radiologist, Dr. Susan Drossman, told her the results of a mammogram she had postponed for six months.

"I was in the centre of an open office, so I started to walk to a corner and spoke quietly," she continued, "my mouth unable to keep up with the questions swirling in my head."

Her first husband, Jay Monahan, died of colon cancer at the age of 42, and her sister Emily Couric died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 54, according to the former "Today" show co-host.

Katie found solace in knowing that her parents, John Martin Couric Jr. and Elinor Hene, as well as her current husband, Molner, all beat cancer.

The author of "Going There" was concerned about her and Monahan's two daughters, Ellie, 31, and Carrie, 26. "They'd already lost one of their parents. The thought of losing another was incomprehensible," she wrote.

Katie revealed in her essay that she underwent two pre-op procedures before having a lumpectomy, also known as breast-conserving surgery, on July 14. She was able to avoid chemotherapy and instead received radiation treatments from September 7 to September 27.

"My left breast does look like I've been sunbathing topless," she wrote before urging other women to get their annual mammograms.

"During this experience, I can't tell you how many times I thanked God that it was 2022. And how many times have I silently thanked all of the dedicated scientists who have been working their tails off to develop better ways to analyze and treat breast cancer?" Katie Couric Media founder Katie Couric concluded.

"However, in order to reap the benefits of modern medicine, we must stay on top of our screenings, advocate for ourselves, and ensure that everyone has access to diagnostic tools that could save their life."

Couric's extensive journalism experience includes roles as a Today co-host, anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News, and special correspondent for ABC News.
