Rob Lowe Reveals the Secret to His Enduring Marriage

How Rob Lowe and Sheryl Lowe keep their marriage going strong after 31 Years: The actor shares two secrets to a happy marriage!

When the happily and successfully married Rob Lowe gives some advice for a healthy marriage, you better believe it. The Outsiders actor has been married to makeup artists Sheryl Berkoff since 1991 and the pair is considered one of the most enduring couples in Hollywood. The Emmy-nominated actor recently appeared on iHeartRadio's Table for Two with Bruce Bozzi podcast, where he reflected on his decades-long marriage with Sheryl and gave viewers some much-needed marriage tips.   

"[Marriage] is hard anywhere, it is not just Hollywood – it's everywhere," Rob told host Bruce Bozzi. The 59-year-old adds, "Sheryl was and is my best friend. So if you marry for anything other than the fact that is your best friend, you're at a disadvantage from the jump, because that will sustain when the other stuff ebbs and flows." Subtly looking back at his many ups and downs with Sheryl throughout the years, Lowe notes how "forgiveness" plays an important role in a marriage.  

"People say marriage takes work. I'm not sure if it takes work, but what it does take is forgiveness, and being really cognizant of what hill you're willing to die on," says the Square Dance actor. After forgiveness, Rob says, maintaining the "physical spark" determines the longevity of a relationship. "I do believe you need the heat for sure," says the actor, adding, "If you don't have the heat – and that's a chemical thing – I mean I still have it with Sheryl, you gotta keep the heat."  

Lowe and Sheryl met on a blind date in 1983 and didn't turn romantic until 1989. The St. Elmo's Fire actor had garnered a bad reputation by then due to his alcohol addiction and the disastrous sex tape scandal in 1988. Rob credits his wife for pulling him out of the pits of addiction and infamy. "I had the feeling that if I was ever going to be able to make it work with anybody, it was Sheryl," Lowe says. The actor continues to gush about Sheryl every now and then. 

 "I knew that if I could not make it with her, I definitely could not make it work with anyone else," said Rob. The pair tied the knot in July 1991 and welcomed their first child, Matthew Edward Lowe, in 1993, and John Owen Lowe, in 1995. Rob takes much pride in his long-lasting marriage and wants the same for his sons. The actor's oldest son once revealed how his father gives the best relationship advice. "He gives little pearls of wisdom like that that I keep with me. Hopefully, I will end up in a 30-year marriage like him," Lowe's son, Matthew, shared.
