Chen Guangcheng Married to Yuan Weijing

Chen Guangcheng met the love of his life Yuan Weijing in 2001, after listening to a radio talk show. At that time, Yuan called into the show to discuss her difficulties in landing a job after graduating from the foreign language department of Shangdong’s Chemistry Institute.

Chen Guangcheng is a father of two children.

Chen listened to the program and later contacted Yuan and relayed his own story of hardship as a blind man living on just 400 Yuan per year. A year later, Yuan traveled to Chen’s village to meet him. The pair married in 2003 in a hush-hush ceremony.

The mother of two had been servicing as an English teacher at the time of the marriage. She quit her job in 2003 to help her husband in his legal work. In the lifetime voyage, Yuan and Chen became parents with two children. The duo gave birth to son Chen Kerui in 2004. In 2005, they welcomed second child a daughter Chen Kesi.

Chen Guangcheng was born on 12 November 1971 in Dongshigu, Yinan County, Shandong, China. He grew up with four brothers of a peasant family in Shandong Province. Chen lost his sight when he was six months old due to a fever that destroyed his optical nerves.  

Even though Chen's family did not identify with organized religion, his upbringing was informed by a traditional belief in virtue present in Chinese culture.  He grew up in a rural area surrounded by poor families at a subsistence level.

Guangcheng's father served as an instructor at a Communist Party School, making $60 annually. At age 18, Chen attended Elementary School for blind as a grade one student in Linyi City.

By 1998, he joined Nanjing University of Traditional Chinese Medicine but because of the financial crisis, he had to borrow $340 to cover tuition fees. He still lacked $400 thus university authorities had to be pleaded with before allowing Chen to enroll. Later on, he specialized in acupuncture and massage. Followed by graduation, he returned to his home region and found a job of a masseur in the hospital-based in Yinan County.
