Hilary Benn is a British Labour Party politician who has been the Member of Parliament (MP) for Leeds Central since a by-election in 1999. He served in the cabinet from 2003 to 2010, under the premierships of both Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. Since 2010, he has served in various Labour Party shadow cabinets, most recently as Shadow Foreign Secretary from May 2015 to June 2016, when he was dismissed by Labour Leader Jeremy Corbyn. He is the son of Labour politician Tony Benn and educationalist Caroline Benn. Benn is a fourth-generation MP – his father, his grandfather Lord Stansgate, and his great grandfathers Sir John Benn and Daniel Holmes were all Members of Parliament, mostly with factions of the Liberal Party. He once said that "I grew up in a household where we talked about the state of the world over breakfast, when we ate at night, and all points in between." Benn was shortlisted for the Grassroot Diplomat Initiative Award in 2015 for his work on increasing aid at DfID, and remains in the directory of the Grassroot Diplomat Who's Who publication.
Benn's first wife, Rosalind, whom he met at university, died tragically early of lung cancer at the age of 26, just five years after their marriage. The couple had no children. Three years later Benn met and married Sally Clark, a special needs teacher, who now runs his Commons office. One of four children, he has four of his own, a girl and three boys, ranging from 18 to 26; the Benns clearly like big families and revel in being a tribe. When he's not working, he has blamelessly quiet middle-class hobbies, such as gardening in his Chiswick home, and watching sport. It is always an incredibly dangerous thing for an interviewer to say but in a party so hit by scandals recently, he seems a pretty safe bet.
