Hiro Kanagawa studied in Canada, the U.S., and Japan. He finished high school at International Christian University High School in Tokyo in 1981. He then went to Middlebury College in Vermont, where he focused on sculpting and minored in music, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1986.

After starting a graduate degree in fine arts at the University of British Columbia but leaving after a year, he completed his Master of Fine Arts degree at Simon Fraser University in 1994. 

It was at SFU where he wrote his first play, Tiger of Malaya, which premiered in 1995 at the Tamahnous Theatre.
