Laurie Ellen David, better known as Laurie David, is an American environmental activist, a producer. She has worked in the movie Fed Up, An Inconvenient Truth and TV series Earth to America!, Too Hot Not to Handle and played in the TV show Enlightened. Also, she worked as a member of the Advisory Board of the Children’s Nature Institute and received Los Angeles-based Children’s natural Institute’s Leaf Award in 2013 for her commitment to the environmental education of young children.
Early Life and Career
Born on 22nd March 1958, USA, Laurie David comes from a middle-class Jewish family on Long Island. She attended Ohio University and earned a degree in journalism in 1979.
She began her career as a coordinator for David Letterman show in New York City. After working there for four years, she started her own management company representing comedians and comedy writers. She has produced different comedy shows for HBO, Showtime, MTV and Fox Television.
Moving to Los Angeles, she became the vice president of comedy development for a division of Fox Broadcasting and developing sitcoms for the 20th Century Fox TV.
Later, she worked full-time on environmental and political issues, where she created awareness founding Stop Global Warming Virtual March, with Senator John McCain and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. She believes, “If everyone does one thing, they are likely to do two things, then three things. Then they are likely to influence friends and family, and that’s how you build a moment.”
In addition to this, she worked on other projects to bring the issue of climate into mainstream popular culture and released a book, Stop Global Warming: The Solution Is You!, and the comedy special, Earth to America! for TBS, on 20th November 2004.
She worked on Academy Award winning documentary, An Inconvenient Truth, directed by Davis Guggenheim which aired on 22nd April 2006 and in environmentalist documentary series, Big Ideas for a Small Planet, on the Sundance Channel.
Laurie is a trustee of the Natural Resource Defense Council and a founding member of The Detroit Project from which she spread public education and action campaign urging Congress and auto-makers to raise fuel efficiency standards and make higher mileage cars. Moreover, the NRDC opened the David Family Environmental Action Centre, which features exhibits on issues such as global warming, ocean pollution, everyday toxins and green building solutions.
Award
For Laurie’s great work, she was honored with Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s organization, Riverkeeper in 2003. She received the Los Angeles-based Children’s Nature Institute’s Leaf Awards for her commitment to the environmental education of young children.
In 2006, she featured in Glamour’s Women of the Year and received the Gracie Allen Awards for Individual Achievement by the American Women in Radio & Television and the NRDC’s 2006 Forces of Nature Awards for her work against global warming.
Personal Life
Laurie was married to Larry David, an American comedian, and play writer. They officially became husband and wife on 31st March 1993. The pair first met through their mutual friends.
They together are parents of two children: Cazzie Laurel and Romy March. The couple filed for divorce after living together for more than 10 years on 13th July 2007. Even after the separation, they remained good friends.
She published a book, The Family Dinner in 2010, where she has shared the domestic traditional of an evening meal and dinner system, suggestions for stimulating conversation and a survey of ways different cultures say grace.
