The actor was born Richard Earl Thomas on June 13, 1951, in Manhattan, New York City, United States. His parents are Barbara Fallis and Richard S. Thomas who were dancers in the New York City Ballet and they used to own the New York School of Ballet.
For his schooling, he attended Allen Stevenson School and McBurney School in Manhattan. Thomas was just seven when he first made his Broadway debut and performed Sunrise at Campobello where he played the role of John Roosevelt.

Richard Thomas is married to Georgiana Bischoff and they tied the knot on November 20, 1994. The couple has a son named Montana James who was born on July 28, 1996. His wife Bischoff has two daughters from her former marriages. Before marrying Bischoff he had formerly tied the knot to Alma Gonzales on the love month February 14, 1975.
The couple gave birth to a son named Richard Francisco in 1976 and triplet daughters Barbara Ayala, Gweneth Gonzales and Pilar Alma on August 26, 1981. But since they couldn't live together, they later on separated in 1993.
