At the time of Skylar's hospital admission, Vince was participating in a pro/celebrity motor race at the Long Beach Grand Prix. He received a call from his then-estranged wife, Sharise, informing him about their daughter's hospitalization. Doctors initially suspected a ruptured appendix, but it was later discovered that Skylar had a cancerous tumor in her abdomen. The diagnosis was Wilms' tumor, a type of kidney cancer that primarily affects children.

Following the initial diagnosis, Skylar underwent multiple surgeries. However, the doctors discovered that the tumor had become more aggressive and dangerous with each operation.

In light of the situation, the doctors recommended Neil and Sharise take Skylar to Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. The goal was to remove all tumor fragments from Skylar's body. A CAT scan revealed that she had tumors on both kidneys, indicating a severe condition. The tumor on her right kidney grew in size, putting pressure on her abdomen and lungs, making it difficult for Skylar to breathe.

As the disease progressed, the tumor spread to her liver, intestines, and back muscles, ultimately leading to her final moments.

During Skylar's final operation, which lasted around ten hours, the doctors successfully removed a tumor that was as large as a football. Neil, in an essay he wrote for People Magazine about his daughter's passing, disclosed that the tumor weighed six and a half pounds. Despite the extensive surgery, unfortunately, Skylar Lynnae Neil, Vince's daughter, could not be saved, and she passed away on August 15, 1995.

Skylar's funeral was held on August 18, and her parents laid her to rest in a small pink casket at Forest Lawn in Los Angeles, California.

Throughout her battle, Skylar underwent six surgeries and endured several months of intensive chemotherapy and radiation treatments. Neil and his then-wife, Sharise, devoted countless hours by Skylar's side in the hospital, providing unwavering support and care.
