A German-American biochemist who is widely known for his study of synaptic transmission. When he was young he was fascinated in music and he studied the bassoon. He regard his bassoon instructor, Herbert Tauscher as most influential person of his life. In 1975, he graduated from Hanover Waldorf School. Later he studied medicine in RWTH Aachen University, Harvard University. Currently he is working as professor in the School of Medicine in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology. For his hard work and dedication he along with his colleague James Rothman and Randy Schekman were awarded with the 2013 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for their work in vesicle trafficking.

Exploring his personal life, he has married twice. He has four children from his first marriage. Due to some reason, his first marriage was unsuccessful and they got divorced. After some years, he again married his girlfriend who professionally is a professor of neurosurgery and of psychiatry. Together they are blessed with two beautiful children. There has been no rumor of any kind of extra marital affair of him with anyone.
