Musk tweeted the Latin phrase "Vox Populi, Vox Dei," which roughly means "the voice of the people is the voice of God." The poll lasted a day. Elon, the new owner of Twitter, indicated in May he would reopen Trump's account after the Capitol attack last year.

Musk previously said that a decision had not been made about bringing back Trump's account and that Twitter had brought back some controversial accounts that had been banned or suspended, like the satirical website Babylon Bee and Kathy Griffin.

In a memo that was seen by Reuters and distributed to the remaining employees at Twitter, Musk requested that people who write software code report to the company's headquarters in San Francisco by early afternoon on Friday.

The billionaire sent a follow-up email in which he wrote the following: "If it's at all possible, I'd really like it if you could travel to San Francisco to be there in person."

Elon said he'd work until midnight and return on Saturday. He asked staff to provide him with a synopsis of their software code's "achievements" in the last six months and up to 10 screenshots of the most critical lines.

Musk wrote in one of the emails, "There will be short technical interviews that will help me better understand the Twitter tech stack." He asked the engineers to meet him at 2 p.m. on Friday.

The emails came one day after it was thought that hundreds of Twitter employees had quit the troubled social media company after Musk gave them until Thursday to sign up for "long working hours at high intensity."

The people leaving added to the chaos and change Musk's first three weeks as Twitter's owner have brought. He fired top managers, including former CEO Parag Agarwal and security and privacy chiefs.

A White House official also said that Twitter should tell Americans how it kept their data safe. On Friday, the tech website Platformer said that the company's top ad sales executive, Robin Wheeler, had been fired.

Two sources say that Twitter told its employees on Thursday that it would shut its offices and stop allowing badge access until Monday. Reuters did not know right away if the headquarters had reopened.

Three people told Reuters that on Friday afternoon, the company started cutting off access to company systems for some employees who had turned down Musk's offer.

Another source said the company planned to save costs by closing down the SMF1 facility near Sacramento, one of Twitter's three primary data centers in the U.S.
