In his more than four decades in the entertainment industry, Coltrane has played a variety of characters, including Dr. Edward "Fitz" Fitzgerald, a criminal psychologist, in the 1990s British TV series Cracker, as well as in the James Bond movies GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough.

"I'll never know someone quite like Robbie again," wrote J.K. Rowling, creator of the Harry Potter series, as she led the tributes on Twitter. "I was extremely lucky to get to know him, work with him, and have a good time with him. He was a truly unique talent. I'm sending his family and his kids my love and my sincere sympathies."

In a statement, Daniel Radcliffe, who plays Harry Potter, referred to Coltrane as "one of the funniest individuals I've encountered." The actor recalled the 2004 movie, "I've especially fond recollections of him keeping our spirits up in 'Prisoner of Azkaban,' when we were all hiding from the pouring rain for hours in Hagrid's hut, and he was saying stories and cracking jokes to keep morale up."

The main setting for the first Harry Potter books is Hogwarts, and Rubeus Hagrid is the Keeper of the Keys and Grounds there.

Belinda Wright, Coltrane's agent, described him as a "special talent" who had delighted kids all around the world by portraying the boy wizard's monster-loving companion. In a statement, she stated, "He was not only a magnificent performer, but also forensically bright..., wonderfully humorous..., and after 40 years of being pleased to be named his agent, I shall miss him."

Anthony Robert McMillan, born on March 30, 1950, in Rutherglen, South Lanarkshire, adopted a new stage name in honor of the legendary jazz musician John Coltrane.

Coltrane played several television parts, including recurring roles in the anthology series The Comic Strip Presents. He was a talented comic actor and a leading figure in Britain's alternative comedy boom of the 1980s.

In 1987, Robbie gained more notoriety when he co-starred with Emma Thompson in John Byrne's miniseries Tutti Frutti as the tragic lead singer, Big Jazza McGlone, in a story about the fictional Scots rock and roll band The Majestics.

As per UK's PA Media, Coltrane passed away in a hospital close to Falkirk in Scotland.
