Matthew Perry Gets Candid About His Relationship with Julia Roberts
Matthew Perry on dating Julia Roberts in the 90s: The 'Friends' alum explains why they couldn't work it out!
Fans can now see through Matthew Perry's accomplished and broken life via his new memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, where the Friends star has gotten candid about a slew of subjects, including his love life, groundbreaking success with the sitcom, and his life-threatening struggle with alcoholism. Though Perry has dated many recognizable faces in the past, including Hollywood's Pretty Woman Julia Roberts, the actor remains single at 53.
Dishing on his relationship with Roberts, Perry reveals why things didn't work out for them. The Seventeen Again actor says he started dating her before the Friends Super Bowl episode. Perry and Roberts had reached a serious stage in their relationship, as the actor says he met her family, but Perry's fear of abandonment ended their budding romance.
In an excerpt, Matthew shares, "I did let her in, both figuratively and literally, and a relationship began." He adds, "we would already be a couple by the time we started filming the Friends Super Bowl episode. Matthew further shares how things ended with her after two months. "I had been constantly certain that she was going to break up with me. Why would she not? I was not enough; I could never be enough; I was broken, bent, unloveable," the actor writes.
Matthew writes about how Roberts, who was already a two-time Oscar-nominated star when she started seeing Perry, carried a puzzled look when the Canadian actor called it quit with her. "Instead of facing the inevitable agony of losing her, I broke up with the beautiful and brilliant Julia Roberts. She might have considered herself slumming it with a TV guy, and the TV guy was now breaking up with her," Perry writes, adding, "I can't begin to describe the look of confusion on her face."
Roberts, 54, who guest-starred in the Friends Super Bowl episode as Susie Moss, took up the role on the condition that she shares a storyline with Perry. The Pretty Woman actress is now married to Cameran man Daniel Moder, with whom she shares three children, twins Hazel and Phinnaeus, 17, and son Henry, 15. Following his brief romance with Roberts, Matthew dated Lizzy Caplan for many years and was last engaged to Molly Hurwitz, a literary manager.
Perry's anticipated memoir also unveils the actor's hard luck finding love. Perry claims most of the women he dated were only interested in his wealth. The Emmy-nominated actor revealed he then resolved to find a woman with her wealth. "The next person I really take seriously is somebody that I'm going to be in love with and not be scared by the things that used to scare me… somebody, who's self-supporting," the actor writes. Here is the complete list of woman Perry dated.

Perry's book details the actor's decades-spanning addiction and one almost fatal accident that worked as a wake-up call. Perry suffered from pneumonia, and an exploded colon, which resulted in Perry being in a coma for weeks. "The doctors told my family that I had a two-percent chance to live. That's the time I really came close to my life ending," the 53-year-old writes. Matthew recently celebrated 18 months of sobriety.
