Hector Elizondo, 82, has done more of the movies and films than his age. The lifetime achievement award winner is best known for his works in movies like Chicago Hopes, Pretty Woman, The Last Man Standing and many others. From his amazing work, today he won numerous awards and achievements. Besides, his professional life, he married thrice and has a child.

Early Life and Education of Héctor Elizondo

Hector Elizondo was born on 22nd December 1936 in New York City, New York. He is of Mixed descent as his father Martin Echevarria Elizondo was of Basque origin and mother, Carmen Medina Reyes from Puerto Rican.

He attended High School of the Performing Arts and many other public schools and used to play basketball and baseball. His skills got him selected by professional basketball and baseball teams, San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates.

After that, he attended City College in New York with the aim of being a history teacher. But he left college as he became a father at an early age. He also studied dance at Carnegie Hall, the Ballet Arts Company from 1962-1963.

Apart from this, he was also interested in music from which he got a chance to sing for the Frank Murray Boys’ Choir at the age of 10.

Héctor Elizondo's Career

Elizondo began his career after making a debut in the movie, The Fat Black Pussycat in 1963 along with the stars Wavy Gravy, Mona Marshall, Leonard Frey, George Mann, Janet Damon, and others. Two years after he landed the Off-Broadway show, Kill the One-Eyed Man, and in 1967, he debuted on TV after appearing in the series, The Edge of Night with the role of Dimitri.

Moreover, he gained much of the popularity after appearing in an American play, Steambath for which he won an Obie Award.

Furthermore, he began to appear in numerous TV series and movies. In 1975, he worked in a TV series, Columbo: A Case of Immunity portraying a murderer. Director, Garry Marshall, was impressed with his work only after the first movie together, Young Doctors in Love. They again came along but this time he was given a role of just ten minutes in the movie, Pretty Woman but even appearing for such a short time, he won a nomination for the Golden Globe Award.

Apart from this, he is also well known from the series, Chicago Hope where he worked along with the casts Mandy Patinkin, Adam Arkin, Mark Harmon, Thomas Gibson, Christine Lahti, and others. He established a remarkable TV character, David E. Kelley for which he was awarded and nominated for various awards.

As of 2016 and 2017, he worked in the movie, Mother’s Day starring Jennifer Aniston and Kate Hudson. After that, he appeared as a voice actor for The Lego Batman Movie by Chris McKay and also for the series, Elena of Avalor.

Awards and Nominations

OBIE Award is one of the first honors of his life which he won in 1971 for the play, Steam bath. After that, he was nominated for the Golden Globe Award in 1991 for the Best Performance in Pretty Woman.

Moreover, he won a nomination for the prestigious Emmy Award for multiple times for the movies, Mrs. Cage and Chicago Hope. Among which he won one of the awards in 1997 for the outstanding supporting actor in a drama series.

Later on, he was nominated for almost seven times for ALMA Award among which he grabbed two of them in 1998 and 2000. Moving on, he was nominated three times for SAG Award and one time for Satellite Award but did not win any one of them.

He also won a Lifetime Achievement Award in Temecula Valley International Film Festival in 2006 which is one of his most significant achievements.

Elizondo married thrice in his lifetime. He married his first wife, one of his neighbor in 1956 when he was a teenager and together had a son named, Rodd Elizondo. But the relationship did not last long and separated in 1957. After the separation, he even left college to take proper care of the child. 

He raised his child for years as a single parent and only for the sake of his child, he got married for the second time. This time, he married a young secretary in 1962, but this relationship also did not last long and divorced a year later in 1963.

On 13th April 1969, he tied the knot for the third time with Carolee Campbell in an intimate ceremony. The couple is still together but has no children yet.
