Mathew James Willis, better known as Matt Willis is a British singer-songwriter, television presenter, and actor. He is best known as the bassist and one of the vocalists of the pop punk band, Busted. He is the winner of the sixth series of the ITV reality series I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here. He has also played in the sitcom Birds of a Feather and EastEnders. He is happily married and has three children with his wife.
Early Life
Matt Willis was born on 8th May 1983 to British parents in the Tooting, London, England. He grew up along with older brother, Darren, and half-sister, Amanda. At the age of 3, her parents divorced, and her mother remarried.
When he was a child, he suffered from tunnel vision, asthma, and hyperactivity problems. He attended Woking High School and moved to Sylvia Young Theater School in Marylebone, London. There he became a close friend of Lee Ryan, Tom Fletcher, Billie Piper, Jodi Albert and Amy Winehouse.
Career
Music career
Willis began his early career as a musician. He first found fame in the music industry as one-third of the pop-rock band, Busted. He formed the band as well as co-wrote almost all of their songs with Charlie Simpson, James Bourne, and Tom Fletcher, although the latter was a member of McFly.
During the period, the trio became successful in Britain and began an upsurge of pop-punk popularity. They had several chart successes and released two studio album and a completion of their greatest hits in America. In 2005, the band disbanded due to Simpson leaving to pursue other projects.
On 10th November 2005, Busted announced through their official website and social media that the band was to reform with a 13-date tour starting in 2016. They also toured the United States and released their third studio album, Night Driver, on 25th November 2016.
As a solo artist, he signed with Mercury Records releasing singles in 2005 and 2006 with songs like Up All Knight, Hey Kid, Don’t Let It Go to Waste and a cover version of The Primitives song, Crash for the movie, Mr. Bean’s Holiday. He also reunites with one of his ex-Busted bandmates and with McFly to form the supergroup, McBusted. They also had a tour and released their debut album named, McBusted.
Television work
Willis took part in the sixth series of Celebrity MasterChef. He also participated in the I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!, where he was crowned King of the Jungle. Soon, he went to Australia and presented I’m a Celebrity… Get Me out of Here! Now on ITV2 after he won the 2006 series.
Not only this, he presented ITV2’s coverage of the BRIT Awards with Lauren Laverne, Russell Howard, and Alesha Dixon and returned in 2008. There he interviewed Rihanna, Shayne Ward, Ozzy Osbourne, Kate Nash and Perez Hilton. In February 2008, he presented the Red Carpet coverage for the E! Entertainment network at the 2008 BAFTA Awards with his wife and Ryan Seacrest.
He portrayed the character of Garth Stubbs in the revival of Birds of a Feather which was created by Laurence Marks and Maurice Gran. He only appeared in the first season, and later Samuel James played the role. Furthermore, he also appeared in the short part of Luke Riley in EastEnders.
Theater work
Willis also made his appearance in the theater play. In October 2010, it was announced that Willis would play Nick in Flashdance: The Musical. Also, he was offered the role of Chuck in an adaption of Footloose and Fiyero in Wicked.
Personal Life
Matt Willis is married to his long-time girlfriend, Emma Willis. The couple began dating in 2005 and after nearly three years of relationship, they married at Ruston Hall, Northampton shire on 5th July 2008. The wedding ceremony was featured in OK magazine.
The husband and wife are proud parents of three children: daughter Isabella and Trixie and son Ace which completed their happy family. The married couple is still together and there is no such news regarding their divorce.
Once he had a brief stint for three weeks in London’s Priory Rehab hospital for alcoholism. At the age of 23, he had problems from the drug-taking including psychological and memory problems and at 25, he entered the Providence project rehab center in Bournemouth after a marriage ultimatum and continued to take drugs and drink heavily.
Later, he took the full five-week course in drugs and alcohol and in 2007, he claimed to have stopped smoking. On 28th February 2010, he was injured in a skiing accident.
