Who is Tindyebwa Agaba's Wife?

Tindyebwa Agaba Wise is married to Jessica Agaba Wise, a British woman who works as a communications manager for Save the Children UK. They met at a charity event in 2015 and got married in 2017. Their marriage was a private ceremony attended by their families and friends.

Childhood in Rwanda

Tindyebwa Agaba Wise’s father was a tea plantation worker and his mother stayed at home. He had three older sisters. He was born in Rwanda in the late 1980s and lived a peaceful life until he was six years old. Then, the Rwandan genocide of 1994 happened. More than 800,000 people died in the genocide, mostly Tutsis who were killed by Hutu extremists.

The Hutu extremists wanted to kill Tindyebwa’s family because they were Tutsis. His father had already died of AIDS before the genocide started, and his mother and sisters disappeared when they ran away from their village.

In addition, he had no one to take care of him, and he had to roam the streets and avoid the murderers. He saw terrible things that haunted him for the rest of his life.

Escape to England

A Care International worker helped Tindyebwa get out of Rwanda. He went to Uganda and lived in a refugee camp for two years. Then he flew to England with a fake passport. He got to London in 1999, when he was 11 years old. He did not know any English and had no papers or family to help him. 

Tindyebwa asked for asylum, but his case was denied because of a mistake in the system. He had to survive on the streets of London, sleeping in parks and under bridges. He faced hate, violence, and hunger every day.

Meeting Emma Thompson

Tindyebwa went to a Christmas party at the Refugee Council in 2003. The Refugee Council is a charity that helps refugees and asylum seekers in the UK. Emma Thompson, who supports the charity, was there too. She saw Tindyebwa sitting by himself in a corner, looking afraid and lonely.

Thompson went to him and tried to talk to him. He only spoke a little English and French, but he said thank you for the hot meal. The actress liked his spirit and his eyes, which showed his smartness and curiosity. She asked him to come to her home for Christmas Eve with her family. He was not sure at first, but he said yes to her.

Adoption by Emma Thompson & Greg Wise

Tindyebwa started a new life when he went to Emma Thompson’s home. He met her husband Greg Wise, who is also an actor and producer, and their daughter Gaia Romilly Wise, who is also an actress. They were nice and friendly to him and made him feel like their own son.

They helped him with his English skills, his education, and his legal status. They also paid for his speech lessons with Joan Washington, a famous dialect coach who worked with many famous actors. Tindyebwa soon called them Mum and Dad, and they adopted him in 2003.
