Legendary R&B Singer Betty Wright is No More; Dies of Cancer

One of the decorated musician of the 20th century Betty Wright has passed away. 

One of the 1970s inspirational singers, Betty Wright, is no more with us. Her niece announced that she passed away at her home in Miami, Florida. The singer had endometrial cancer, which was diagnosed in the fall. She was 66 years old at the time of her death.

Known for her hit song "Clean Up Woman," "No Pain, No Gain," she was an admirable figure and notable for the use of whistle register.

Two days before her death, singer Chaka Khan had pleaded followers for urgent prayer for her friend Betty on her Twitter.

The "I Feel for You" singer's post read:

"My beloved sister, Betty Wright, is now in need of all your prays," the tweet said. "In Jesus Name We Pray for Sister Betty." 

Born as Bessie Regina Norris, she grew up in Miami, Florida, and was the youngest of seven children of her parents. At just two, she began her professional career singing with her sibling, who formed the gospel group, "Echoes of Joy."    

The talented celeb released her first album "Girls Can't Do What Guys Can Do" in 1968. She is the first woman to have a gold record on her own label, Mrs. B Records.  Wright won her first and only Grammy Award for her 1975 single "Where Is the Love." In her career, she released 20 albums and over fifty songs.

The "Tonight is the Night" singer married Jamaican Dj and musician King Sporty with whom she remained in marital tie-up from 1943 until his death in 2015.  Now, the Grammy Award-winning singer is survived by her four children, three daughters Asha Wright, Aisha McCray, Patrice Parker, and son Chaka Azuri. She had another Patrick Parker, unfortunately, at a young age of 21, he was murdered on December 25, 2005. 

Many musicians like Gloria Gaynor, Snoop Dogg, John Legend, DJ Khaled, Ledisi paid tribute to the charismatic artist's demise on their social media. At this sad moment, we express our deepest condolence to Betty's family and close ones! She will be sorely missed.
