Dano was raised along with his younger sister, Sarah Dano. He attended the Browning School. He moved to New Canaan, Connecticut along with his family and finally settled in Wilton, Connecticut.
Dano completed graduation in 2002 from Wilton High School and later he joined Eugene Lang College in New York City.

Paul Dano started acting at the age of 10 in classical plays on Broadway and made his screen debut in Inherit the Wind in 19996. He got his first major film role at 16 in L.I.E. Then he appeared in the TV movie Too Young to Be a Dad.
In 2004, Dano shared the screen with Angelina Jolie, Olivier Martinez and Ethan Hawke in Taking Lives. In 2006, he got his major breakthrough in the comedic drama Little Miss Sunshine, the movie received critical acclaim and collective awards. Some of his screen credit incudes; Gigantic, Ruby Sparks, Youth, Knight and Day,Where the Wild Things Are and others.
Dano announced his directorial debut in 2016 with the movie, Wildlife which was based on the 1990 novel with same name. He is also the vocalist and lead guitarist of the band Mook.
