In 1997, the actor married Dutch model Carin van der Donk. They knew each other and kindled romance from 1993 to the date they took the affair to the next level. D'Onofrio dated Donk for five years and finally walked down the aisle in the presence of loved ones.

After being in an intimate relationship for two years, the duo welcomed a son Luka D’Onofrio. In the mid-2000s D’Onofrio and Donk took a break from their marriage, but later reunited and had a second son, Elias Gene D’Onofrio in 2008.
