Actor Tom Hanks and Wife Rita Wilson are now Greek Citizens
Cast Away actor Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson are now legally Greek Citizens and the news is broken by none other than the Greek Prime Minister himself.
On Saturday, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Prime Minister of Greece, posted a picture of himself with his wife Mareva Grabowski, Tom Hanks, and Rita Wilson and announced that the American actors are now proud Greek Citizens. In the photo, Hanks and his wife were seen holding Greek passports.
It is reported that Greek citizenship is extended to the Hanks' children as well. Hanks and Wilson are parents to Chet Hanks and Truman Hanks. The Toy Story actor also has son Colin Hanks and daughter Elizabeth Hanks from his marriage to Samantha Lewes.
The Greek Citzenship for Hanks couple seemed inevitable as they have been one of the most influential ambassadors of the country. In 2018, when fires devastated areas near Athens, Forrest Gump actor raised the issue and brought it in front of the global attention. Because of his act, he and his wife were awarded honorary citizenship of Greece.
The 64-year-old actor on various times has professed his love for Greece. Hanks in an interview during the 2020 Golden Globe Awards stated the following:
"Greece is a haven... I've been around the world, I've been to the most beautiful places in the world, none of them tops Greece. The land, the sky, the water, it's good for the soul, it's a healing place"
Hanks and his wife also own several properties on their favorite country. In 2004, they built a summer home on the Greek island of Antiparos and, in 2018, bought a second home in the Skala area of the Greek Island of Patmos.
It is to be noted that Wilson is of Greek and Bulgarian descent and a member of the Greek Orthodox Church. Before marrying her, Hanks converted to her faith.
