Ellen Barkin is an American actress who came to limelight from the comedy-drama movie “Diner” directed by Barry Levinson in 1982. She also appeared in “This Boy’s Life,” “Sea of Love,” “Ocean’s Thirteen” where she has shared the screen with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pit and so on. Moreover, she won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries for her performance in Television movie “Before women had Wings” released in 1997.
Early Life
Born on 16th April 1954 in The Bronx, New York, U.S. Ellen Barkin is a daughter of Evelyn, a hospital administrator at Jamaica Hospital and Sol Barkin, a chemical salesman. She spent childhood with younger brother George Barkin, an editor-in-chief of National Lampoon and High Times Magazines.
She enrolled at Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts and attended Hunter College, New York where she majored in history and drama.
She was interested in teaching ancient history, but later she joined New York City’s Actor Studio. She learned acting for ten years before entering into the Hollywood industry.
Career
After completing the acting course, Ellen Barkin made acting debut from the movie Up in Smoke playing a minor role. She also made her appearance in the film Kent State, and We’re Fighting Back, but her performance in the movie Diner gained much appreciation from the viewers.
After receiving success in the industry, she was cast in the film This Boy’s Life directed by Micheal Caton-Jones. The movie starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro as lead characters and also featured Chris Cooper, Carla Gugino, Eliza Dushku and Tobey Maguire.
Besides her acting in the Hollywood movies, she has made her appearance in the TV shows including King of the Hill, Modern Family, The New Normal and the Animal Kingdom.
