The Emeritus Economics Professor, Donald Harris was previously married to the late scientist and activist Shyamala Gopalan. The couple first met in a civil rights rally at the University of California, Berkeley and began to bond over their passion for civil rights.

Well, the couple dated for some time and later got married. Donald who is Jamaican and Shyamala who came from India created a beautiful home with a mixture of both of their cultures.

The happy home, however, did not last long and the couple divorced in the 1970s. At the time of the divorce the couple first child, Kamala Harris was seven years old and their second daughter Maya Harris was five years old.

After divorce, the children stayed with the mother with visitation to Donald on the weekends and summers. so, he was not directly involved in upbringing but he is still close to his children.

Donald usually keeps a low profile and tries to remain away from the limelight. However, his strong rebuke on Kamala Harris statement on marijuana garnered a lot of attention. On a radio show, New York Breakfast Club, Kamala said she supports smoking marijuana because of her Jamaican Heritage. Harris issued a statement after her comments and stated:

“My dear departed grandmother, as well as my deceased parents, must be turning in their grave right now to see their family’s name, reputation and proud Jamaican identity being connected, in any way, jokingly or not with the fraudulent stereotype of a pot-smoking joy seeker and in the pursuit of identity politics. Speaking for myself and my immediate Jamaican family, we wish to categorically dissociate ourselves from this travesty.”

In late June 2019, he is again back in the news because of his ancestry which involves slave owners Hamilton-Brown. His daughter Kamala who is running for President in 2020 is attacked by her critics saying that she is one of the descendants of the slave owner.
