Alexander Skarsgård Biography

Early Life           

Born on 25th August 1976, Alexander Skarsgard is the elder son of Stella Skarsgard and My Sonja Marie Agnes. He grew up along with five other siblings: Gustaf, Sam, Bill, Eija and Valter and two half-brothers, Ossian and Kolbjorn in Stockholm, Sweden.

Being the son of actor Stellan Skarsgard, he quickly enrolled in the Hollywood industry. When he was 7, he made his acting debut in the movie Ake and His World which was directed and written by a friend of his father, Allan Edwall. Not only this, he also acted in the Swedish television production Hunden som log (The Dog That Smiled).

Later, when he was 19, he decided to do a national service and joined Swedish military where he served for 18 months, dealing with anti-sabotage and anti-terrorism in the Stockholm archipelago. After his service, he left Sweden in 1996 and attended Leeds Beckett University in England nearly for six months.

He left the University and decided to join acting after seven years gap from acting. Then in 1997, he learned theater course at Marymount Manhattan College and left England for New York City. There he auditioned and landed the role of Meekus in the 2001 movie, Zoolander.

Career

Skarsgard returned to Sweden after six months in New York and began his acting career. In 2003, he worked in the romantic comedy movie, Hindtricket (The Dog Trick) directed by Christopher Eklow and Christopher Panov. In the movie, he shared the screen alongside Linux Wahlgren and Josephine Bornebusch. The movie earned him a Guldbagge Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. During the period, he was named the Sexiest Man in Sweden five times.

The same year, he directed and wrote the short movie Att Doda Ett Barn (To Kill a Child) based on Stig Dagerman’s novel att Doda ett barn. For his work, he received two Odense International Film Festival awards.

In 2004, he moved to Los Angeles though he continued to work in Sweden movies including The Last Drop, Om Sara and Kill Your Darling. He made his breakthrough from the critically acclaimed HBO miniseries Generation Kill directed by Susanna White and Simon Cellan Jones. It is based on the 2004 book of the same name written by Evan Wright about his experience as an embedded reporter with the United States Marine Crops’ 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Before leaving to shoot Generation Kill, he was unsure to play the role of Vampire but when he heard that he would be working with Alan Ball creator of HBO series Six Feet Under and Academy Beauty, he decided to work for the dark fantasy horror television series True Blood. He auditioned for the role of Bill Compton but eventually, he was cast as Eric Northman who is a Viking vampire sheriff, local bar owner and potential love interest of actress Sookie Stackhouse.

For his great role, he received several awards and nominations. He won 4 Scream Award and Satellite Awards for a different category. He also received nominations for Screen Actors Guild Awards, Saturn Awards, NewNowNext Awards and Teen Choice Awards.

He also made his appearance in Lars vin Tries’s written and directed psychological drama-sci-fi movie Melancholia. The movie starred Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Brady Corbet and John Hurt. It was one of his successful hit movie which earned the box office collection of $15.9 million.

Apart from acting, Skarsgard has appeared in the music video for pop singer Lady Gaga’s Paparazzi. He also has his voice in the 2009 English-language Swedish-Danish-Norweigan adult animated mystery thriller drama science fiction movie, Metropia. He even portrayed Terje, a gay Norweigan trekking to the North Pole in the British documentary, Beyond the Pole.

Moreover, he is currently working in an American drama HBO miniseries created and written by David E. Kelley which is based on the novel by Liane Moriarty. His upcoming movies are The Aftermath, Mute and Hold the Dark which is to be released in 2017 and 2018.

Personal Life

Talking about Skarsgard’s personal life, he is in a relationship with Alexa Chun, his girlfriend since June 2015. The couple first met each other in February 2015. They attended the Father John Misty show and Glastonbury Festival together.

The duo was nearly inseparable and finally revealed their relationship in June 2015 when they were taking a stroll in a park in New York as they were captured holding hands while walking.

During an interview on Watch What Happens Life, Andy Cohen asked him if he is going to marry Chun and he revealed that he is truly in love with his girlfriend and will marry her in near future.

Unfortunately, the couple has broken up after nearly two years of relationship in 2017. As of now, he is single. 

As per the sources, he was previously in a relationship with Kate Bosworth and Izabella Miko.
