Jason Momoa was born on August 1, 1979, in Honolulu, Hawaii, US. He is American and is of mixed (Hawaiian, German, Irish) ethnic background. He is the son of Coni Momoa and Joseph Momoa. His father, the native of Hawaii, was a painter whereas his mother was a photographer and is of German, Irish, and Native American ancestry.

Momoa was raised by his mother in Norwalk, Iowa. He studied marine biology as a major subject at a college in Iowa, after completing his high school education. He transferred to Colorado State University changing his major subject to wildlife biology. He moved to the Hawaiian Islands to reconnect his father before accomplishing his degree.

Momoa studied Buddhism in Tibet, took up pastel painting in Paris, and traveled to different places in his youth days.
